Celebrate the Women in Your Life!

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated each year on March 8th. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911, a period when there was considerable growth and conflict in the industrialized world and a surge of progressive ideologies. Originating in making positive gains for women’s equality, IWD continues to focus world attention on areas requiring further action, while celebrating the social, economic and political achievements of women. Thousands of events are held throughout the world on March 8th to inspire women and celebrate achievements.

Although March 8th has come and gone this year, I chose to extend my consideration of this holiday by continuing to reflect on the women in my life. Most of these women haven’t necessarily been instrumental in furthering women’s equal recognition as the holiday equates itself with fundamentally, but these women have inspired greater awareness, change, independence and self recognition that have been important for me personally. These women include my mom, close family, good friends, mentors along my academic and personal journey and women I have never met though are equally inspirational. I have also given thought to the qualities of these women in my life that stand out to me as admirable. Strength, determination, courageous, compassionate, confident, independent, devoted, honest, innovative, passionate, and the list goes on.

Who are the women that you recognize as important in your life? What are some words or thoughts describing the women who have influenced you or enriched your life?
